EUROCITIES AWARDS 2008

The cities of Espoo (Finland), Ghent (Belgium) and Newcastle (United Kingdom) are the winners of the EUROCITIES Awards 2008, presented at the Eurocities Annual Conference on 27 November 2008. The award, now in its third year, recognises city councils’ success in involving their citizens in local governance. Newcastle was the winner of the Participation award for its Udecide project. Aimed at scaling up citizens’ participation, this scheme enables city residents to take part in discussions and decisions on a wide range of community projects and encourages contact between the city’s different residential groups.
