Business and Biodiversity

On 12 and 13 November 2007, under the Portuguese Presidency, business leaders, biodiversity experts, NGOs and policy makers met in Lisbon to explore how European business cam improve its competitiveness whilst halting biodiversity loss. Background papers and presentations are available from the following four workshops:

 

Biodiversity-related responsibility schemes:
This workshop looked at the opportunities and challenges of integrating biodiversity objectives into responsibility schemes which address such issues as corporate social responsibility, strategic environmental assessment, social nd environmental accreditation and labeling, socially responsible investment and corporate philanthropy. It also considered what the EU can do to mainstream biodiversity into corporate responsibility schemes;

 

Business-related biodiversity assessments:
This workshop explored the challenges and opportunities of developing biodiversity targets, performance indicators and assessment methodologies for measuring the biodiversity impacts of business. It covered such topics as corporate biodiversity assessments, industry-wide biodiversity assessments, landscape-level biodiversity assessments and accountability and reporting. It also considered what the EU could do to strengthen methods and tools for biodiversity assessments.

 

Markets for biodiversity goods and services:
This workshop explored the challenges and opportunities of developing markets and business opportunities for biodiversity-friendly goods and services. It explores areas such as eco-agriculture, sustainable forestry and non-timber forest products, fisheries and aquaculture, bio-carbon, watershed services, biodiversity offsets/banking, corporate biodiversity management services, ecotourism, and recreational hunting and fishing. It also considered what the EU could do to encourage private investment in sustainable biodiversity businesses.

 

Business and biodiversity partnerships:
This workshop explored the challenges and the opportunities of scaling up business and biodiversity partnerships across Europe. It considered what the EU can do to promote biodiversity partnerships with European businesses.
