Before establishing Global to Local, Helmut was Assistant Director of Environmental Services at the London Borough of Sutton. Whilst there he was responsible for establishing the Council as one of the greenest local authorities, as recognised by a number of national awards. Helmut’s expertise lies in the application of environmental management systems to public and private organisations including the introduction of environmentally sustainable technology. He also has expertise in waste management, land use planning, contracting and client management, and has worked extensively with the community.

His principal activity with Global to Local has been as an active proponent of environmental management systems, having been party to the introduction of EMAS for UK Local Government at the conceptual stage, as an advisor to the Secretary of State for the Environment, and as an advisor to the UK Accreditation body. He chairs the TCPA zero-carbon task forceand was a member of the Management Committee for the UK Natural Step until 2000.
